How to felt a wool hat using wet felting. Felted hats

I suggest making a bath hat, emerald-turquoise, deep (so that they can enter long hair), with high margins.

We will need:

  • Wool (selected colors in the photo).
  • Liquid soap.
  • Water.
  • A table covered with bubble wrap and/or an IKEA rug.
  • Mosquito net.
  • A piece of plastic pipe.
  • Towel 2-3 pcs.
  • Scissors, pencil, paper, tailor's yardstick...
  • Vibro-grinding machine (VShM).

We are making a pattern. Width - head volume/2 (58/2=29 cm), height - 20 cm. We increase the pattern taking into account the shrinkage of the wool (up and down I got 6 cm, right and left 8 cm), add margins + 16 cm (finished - 10 cm).
We cut out a template from a laminate backing (possibly thick polyethylene).

Let's start laying out the wool.
To get a flexible brim and not make the hat heavier, we lay out the wool in a herringbone pattern on the brim, the first row at an angle of 45 degrees to the edge of the template, the second row at an angle of 45 degrees to the previous row.

On the crown, first lay out the strands of wool horizontally (relative to our hat).

Then vertically. Or rather, according to “parallels” and “meridians”. The wool should extend slightly (1.5-2 cm) beyond the template. The layout is as even as possible, without gaps or thickenings.

Cover with a mosquito net. Pour in warm soapy water (3-4 clicks of the dispenser per 200 ml of water).

Use your palms (up and down movements) to wet the entire layout.

Carefully remove the mesh and turn the template along with the wool over to the other side.
We wrap the protruding ends of the wool onto the template.

We repeat the layout as on the first side. We wet it, turn it over, and wrap the protruding ends of the wool onto the template.

We do the second layer of the layout in the same way as the first, only in the vertical layer we introduce the second shade.

In the third layer of the layout we use three shades of wool.

The layout is complete.

Let's misbehave a little. All prepared shades of wool are used.

We cover our workpiece with plastic film and pass the VSM along it, do not forget to work on the second side.

If there is no VSM, then you can do without it - cover it with a net and begin to rub in the fur with light stroking movements. A soft soap foam should appear. If there is a lot of water or foam, remove it with a towel; if you add too little. We gradually increase the pressure. Raise the net regularly (it may fall on the fur). We turn the workpiece over and work with the second side. We repeat several times.
After GSOM I still rub it in with my hands.

The wool should stick tightly to the template; you should not feel any movement of the layers under your hands.

We place our workpiece on a towel and wrap it around a piece of pipe. We ride a hundred times in different directions. After 800 rolling, I rinse the workpiece with water, add soap (if required), and roll 50 times.
The template inside is getting crowded, it’s time to remove it.

We are working out all the “seams”.
One hand is inside the hat, the other is outside - three.

We put the hat on the table, fold it in half, press the bottom half with our hand, and move the top half away from us. We repeat all this many times in all directions. After such felting, we rub all areas with our palms. We felt and grind again. The wool itself will tell you in which direction to work with it.

Tubercles should appear, which will become smaller with each cycle.

The hat is already close to the required size.

Let's move on to water procedures. First, three and knead in hot water, then in cold water. We periodically check our pattern.

We repeat until the felt begins to “cry”, i.e., when squeezing, water comes out in droplets. When all this happens and in cold and hot water, our felt is ready.

All that remains is to form as required, dry and steam.

May all felters forgive me, but on bath hats I always hem the edges on a machine. This is how the “picture” acquires a “frame”.

Felting is an old craft that was widely used in creating wardrobe items. In the old days, not a single fair was held without sales or purchases of felted items. There are two felting techniques: dry and wet. For wardrobe items use wet, for bulky items - dry. Wet felting a hat involves compacting the material to form a single fiber.

The pattern is not difficult. Even beginners can handle this, but it will be much better if you watch a special training video before doing so.

Let's look at how to make a template step by step:

  1. First you need to make a calculation. For this we need the size of the head. We measure the circumference of the head and the length from the crown to the neck. We divide the resulting values in half and allocate a percentage for the shrinkage of the material.
  2. We determine the intersection point and withdraw the resulting amount from it. We get 4 points (half of the whole).
  3. We connect these points with a dotted line, maintaining a bell shape.
  4. Add the shrinkage percentage. 30% is enough. The percentage is calculated from the original data.
  5. We connect the resulting pattern with lines. When determining the percentage, pay attention to the type of wool. Its thickness directly affects the shrinkage of the material. The denser the material, the less it will settle.

This pattern is a help for beginners.

Step-by-step felting of a bathhouse cap: master class from professionals

For bath lovers, an original cap will be an excellent attribute in a hot sauna. Wet felting is great for wardrobe items. Consider a master class on making a bath cap.

To work you need:

  1. Material for pattern;
  2. Wool;
  3. Polyethylene;
  4. Nylon fabric;
  5. Warm soapy liquid;
  6. Sanding machine, if available;
  7. Gloves for work.

We make a pattern on paper. The hat will be in the shape of a bell. We focus on size 56. Based on this, the width is 44 cm and the height is 28 plus 6 cm to create a semicircle. Let's make another pattern on polyethylene.

We put the polyethylene under the paper and begin to lay out the wool. Let's choose the main shade and start working from the top of the head. Thin strands will make approximately 6 rows.

The next step is to wet press the pattern. Place a nylon cloth on top of the felt ball and moisten it with a soap solution. It will be convenient to use a spray bottle.

We begin to wipe the future hat, moving from the central part to the sides. When the wool lies evenly, you can begin to make circular movements, lifting the nylon fabric. These manipulations must be performed until the felt stops stretching.

We apply a film pattern to the product. It is necessary to press down the template well. Carefully tuck any protruding fibers behind the film.

Next you need to place the second ball. Now starting from the bottom and moving to the top. Next you need to carry out the same manipulations as with the first layer. Cover with a nylon cloth, moisten and smooth out a little. Then the hat blank must be turned over. Carefully tuck any protruding fibers behind the film.

Now you need to make a cross layer of wool. On the sides the villi can boldly protrude, while at the top and parallel to it a straight line should form.

The thickness of the wool layer should be the same in both balls.

On the other side the process is similar. Then repeat the cross layer on both sides. Total of 4 layers in total on each side.

The wool needs to be pressed. To do this, you can use a special machine or work manually. There is no need to process the edges.

Monitor the moisture content of the product. In case of high humidity, remove excess water with a towel.

Next you need to roll the hat onto a stick and roll it on a bamboo mat. The procedure will take 5 minutes, after which the product is straightened and the felting side is changed. You need to allocate 20 minutes for this. During surgery, smooth out any creases. After this, the cap must be turned out and the procedure repeated. The product resembles a cap.

It’s time to add a soap solution to well-felted wool. It is better to work with gloves. You need to crush the product thoroughly.

While felting, straighten the craft on both sides.

When the product begins to shrink, you need to put the hat in hot water and wrinkle it a little. Next, lower the product into cold water. Repeat this contrast again. This is an important measure so that the hat gets used to changes in temperature in the bathhouse. When finished, rinse the product in warm water and dry with a towel.

The still wet hat must be put on the workpiece and given the desired shape.

If desired, you can create a woolen decor. You can also make the lining on silk.

An interesting idea - felting a hat with ears

The felting technique can be used when creating a hat with earflaps. You can also create children's versions of the product with cat ears.

Let's consider interesting option hats with ears. For work we will need:

  1. Wool is the main material;
  2. Material for pattern;
  3. Soapy water;
  4. Polyethylene;
  5. Sanding machine (if available).

The usual pattern involves a circle in the shape of the head. For hats with ears, you need to cut out an ellipse. We take head circumference data, but stretch the circle. The correctness of the calculation can be easily checked using a thread. Use it to measure the circumference of your head and compare it with the drawn ellipse.

The most important part of the pattern is drawing the ears. We draw them in a circle, taking into account that the ear deviates from the center if you look at the head profile drawing.

At the end of intensive felting, we give the product a contrasting bath, after which we rinse the hat and allow it to dry on the workpiece. Malachai is ready to use.

Felting a men's hat for everyday wear

Wool hats retain heat well and regulate humidity. For a fisherman husband, such a gift will be a real salvation on winter fishing.

You need to buy wool from the appropriate store desired color and density.

The set of tools remains the same. We will need:

  1. Wool;
  2. Polyethylene;
  3. Soapy liquid;
  4. Felting machine (if available);
  5. Pattern paper;
  6. Nylon fabric.

The sequence of work and technique is maintained. We measure the circumference of the head and make a pattern. Next, we place the felt in several balls and knead it thoroughly, spraying it with soapy water.

After repeating the manipulations on both sides, we begin felting. The process will take about an hour. After this, we wash the product and leave it to dry on the workpiece.

In Georgia, woolen hats are considered a traditional headdress for men. This wardrobe item can be found in every Georgian.

Proper felting of a wool hat: master class (video)

Natural wool hats have an original appearance and beneficial properties knitted products. The hat can be worn every day or taken with you to the bathhouse. And a hat made with your own hands will become a nice gift to family and friends. You can make a design to your taste, the work itself is not difficult, but interesting product everyone will like it.

Felting is an ancient craft that was widely used in the manufacture of wardrobe items. In the past, not a single fair was held without sales or purchases of felted products. There are only two felting techniques: dry and wet. Used for wardrobe items wet felting, for large products - dry. Wet felting a hat represents the compaction of a thing, forming a single fiber. The felt hat is quite warm due to the fact that it is made from wool. Using this technique you can create a fashionable cap, a cap, and a hat. Of course, creating such a hat will be more difficult than a knitted one, especially for the first time, but the result is worth it!

First, we need a stencil. The pattern is not difficult to make. Even beginners can cope with this. The first thing you need to do when cutting a hat for felting is to measure the circumference of your head.

Let's figure it out how to create a template step by step:

First you need to create a calculation. For this we will need the size of the head. Measure the circumference of the head and the length from the crown to the neck. Let's divide the derived values in half and allocate a percentage for the shrinkage of materials.

Let's find the intersection point and take the resulting amount from it. We get four points (halves of the whole).

We connect these points with a dotted line, reaching a bell shape.

Let's add the shrinkage percentage. 30% is enough. The percentage is calculated from all initial data.

We attach the created pattern with lines. When finding the percentage, let's look at appearance wool Its thickness will directly affect the shrinkage of the material. The stronger the material, the less it will settle.

This pattern is a help for those new to this business.

Step-by-step felting of a bath cap: master class from the masters

For sauna fans, unique felted hats will be a wonderful attribute in a warm sauna. Wet felting good for wardrobe items. Let's look at a master class on creating a felted bath hat from simple materials.

For the master class you will need:

  • Material for creating a pattern;
  • Wool.
  • Polyethylene.
  • Nylon material.
  • Warm soap.
  • Grinding machine.
  • Gloves for our work.

Create a pattern on paper. The hat will be in the shape of a bell. We are working on size fifty-six. Based on this, the width is 44 cm and the height is 28 plus six centimeters to make a semicircle. We create another pattern on polyethylene.

Let's put the polyethylene under the paper and start laying out the wool. Let's choose the main shade and start creating from the top of the head. You will get about six rows of thin strands.

The next step will be to wet press our pattern. Place nylon material on top of the felt ball and moisten with soapy water. It will be easier to do this with a spray bottle.

Let's start wiping our hat as we move forward from the central part to the side parts. When the wool lies evenly, you can begin to make circular manipulations, lifting the nylon material. These actions must be performed until the felt stops stretching.

Let's put a film pattern on the item. You need to press down the template correctly. Slowly tuck any protruding fibers behind the film.

Then you need to put the second ball. Now let's start from the bottom, we'll move up. Next you need to carry out the same actions as with the first layer. Cover with nylon material, moisten and iron. Then the hat blank needs to be turned over. Slowly tuck the exposed fibers behind the film.

Now we need to create a cross layer of wool. On the sides, the villi can appear brightly, while on the top of the head and parallel to it a straight line should appear.

The thickness of the wool layer should be identical in the two balls.

Then cover the cross layer again with a cloth, spray it with soapy water, and wipe everything off. Turn it over and remove any exposed lint.

On the second side the process is carried out in the same way. Then repeat the cross layer on both sides. A total of four layers on each side.

All the wool needs to be compressed. To do this, you can take a special machine or work with your own hands. There is no need to process the edges.

Let's monitor the moisture content of the item. In case of high humidity, remove excess water with a towel.

Next, you need to roll the cap onto a stick and roll it on a special mat. The procedure will take only five minutes, after which the item straightens and the felting side changes. You need to allocate fifteen minutes for this. During manipulation, we smooth out the creases. After this, you need to turn the cap inside out and repeat the steps. The product looks like a cap.

You can add a soap solution to well felted wool. It is worth working with gloves. You need to completely crush the product.

While working, straighten the craft on both sides.

When the item begins to shrink due to some factors, you need to put the hat in hot water and wrinkle it a little. Then we lower the item into cold water. We will repeat this contrast a couple of times. This is a serious measure to get the hat used to changes in temperature in the bath. At the end of the work, you need to rinse the item in warm water and dry it with a towel.

A still wet cap needs to be put on the workpiece and given certain shapes.

If you want, you can make woolen decor. You can also create a silk lining.

A unique idea, felting a hat with ears, master class

Felting technology can be used to make a hat with earflaps. You can also make children's versions of things with cat ears.

Let's look at an interesting version of hats with ears. To work we will need:

  • Wool is the main material.
  • Material for creating a pattern.
  • Soapy water.
  • Polyethylene.
  • Grinding machine.

A simple pattern involves a circle in the shape of the head. For hats with ears, you need to cut out an ellipse. Let's take information about head circumference measurements, but draw out the circle. The correctness of the calculations can simply be checked using a thread. Using it to measure the circumference of your head and compare with the depicted ellipse.

Let's make a hat like this. It's not very difficult, but not entirely simple either.

We will need the following: merino wool 20 microns 50 grams, silk fibers for decoration 15 grams, bubble wrap, soap solution, towel, rolling pin, warm water. A blank is desirable, but you can get by with your own head :)

So, let's start by building a template. We make it from dense polyethylene. We take 2 measurements: head circumference and distance from the back of the head to the eyebrows. I want to make a size 58 hat. The girth is 58, respectively, the height from the back of the head to the eyebrows is 40. Divide the measurements in half and draw a hat with a width of 29 and a height of 40. Add 10 cm from the bottom to the lapel.

Now I multiply the half-circumference of the head by the shrinkage factor of 1.3.

29*1.3=37, round 7 to 38.

38-29=9 is an increase for shrinkage.

Divide it in half and add 4.5 cm on all sides.

For the top volume, I add 10 cm at the top of the head.

I cut out the template without cutting off the film from the bottom. It will block the brim of the hat from collapsing.

Place the template on the navel and begin laying out one side. We will lay out the wool in 3 layers. First vertical. We lay out thin strands with blunt, denser ends towards the edge of the template. Our goal is to lay out an even layer of wool without going beyond the boundaries of the template. Only at the top of the head there is a 2 cm exit. The strands half overlap the length of the previous row.

Now the second horizontal layer. The blunt ends extend 2 cm beyond the template. Place an even curb along the bottom edge. Then we lay the entire surface evenly.

The third layer will be diagonal. The strands lie at an angle of 45 degrees to the vertical of the cap and perpendicular to each other.

Water the layout with a saturated soap solution. I took liquid hand soap "Alice", strawberry :)

Cover with bubble wrap and press carefully with your hands.

Now, with a deft movement, we turn this over.... Sorry, lyrical digression :) I don’t like the word “sandwich”, “sandwich” implies the presence of bread and butter. And we got “wool film”. Here! :)

We stretch the allowances onto the template, stick the fur on, leaving no cavities on the fold.

We begin laying out the second side of the hat. Remember: 3 layers. Vertical, horizontal, diagonal.

On the second horizontal layer we do not go beyond the template. On the diagonal, the thin ends come out a little.

Now along the edges of the template we will lay out thin strands with the thin ends outward. They will help us close the seams correctly.

Water, cover, press, turn over.

Fold the allowances onto the template. We tuck the hairs along the bottom cut.

And the fun part begins - the decor! I took dyed silk curls and rolls for decoration. But you can put a silk rag, different fibers, or even draw a picture with wool. Space for imagination! So far it looks monstrous, but as practice has shown, the result will not be bad :)

Cover, press, turn over. We decorate the second side. We bend the wool on it at the cut.

And now we begin to fool around. You can cover everything with film and go through the VSM. But in this case, I decided to do without it. There is no heroism in this. The machine does not replace hands, it only slightly speeds up the grinding process. I wrap the “wool film” onto a sports stick. You can use a rolling pin. I fix the roll with a towel and roll it 50 times, pressing on the roll. If you just roll this structure over the table, it won’t do much good.

I unwind the roll and turn the cap 45 degrees. I'm rolling again. Then another 45 and another. We rolled in four directions.

We lift the film, put on vinyl gloves and begin to gently iron the hat. If the decor comes off, roll it again. The goal is that the decor should lie well on the fur.

We wrap the hat in a towel and twist the roll 30 times in 4 directions. The shrinkage is more intense.

Then we straighten the seams.

The wool has stuck together and we have a large cap. Now it needs to be felted to the desired size 58. Now I understand the meaning of the threat “I’ll hit you right now!” This means applying a variety of physical forces to an object. Let's get started!

Heat the hat in hot water (not boiling water). Knead it like dough, rub it against a bubble, periodically level it and remind the object of the shape of a hat.

Roll it in a towel, changing the position of the hat. The part that is inside the roll shrinks more. We change the position of the seams so that there are no pronounced ribs. This way we bring the hat to the desired size and quality of felt. It should become elastic and homogeneous.

Rinse, combining rinsing with a light thermal shock. Warm water, cold. And so on several times. The last water is cold. Wring out and roll out with a rolling pin on a dry towel, leveling the surface of the felt.

Now we put it on a blank or on the head. We make a lapel and form the crown. The folds should be pressed tightly with your fingers or even sewn with a basting stitch. When drying, the felt will remember the shape given to it.

And now the hat is ready! Tomorrow it will dry and you can wear it.

A couple of hours ago I had a pile of wool, and now I have a hat! Isn't this a miracle?!;)
