Spring and Labor Day in 2017 is celebrated for 3 days:

  • April 29, Saturday, just a day off
  • 30th, Sunday, another day off
  • May 1, Monday, Spring and Labor Day.

In addition, according to the Labor Code (Article 112), this is an officially non-working day.

  • 8th, Monday, day off on January 7 in accordance with Russian Government Decree No. 756 of August 4, 2016

It should be noted here that April 28 and May 5 will be full working days, since they do not precede public holidays.

In addition, there are many more (professional) holidays in May:

  • May 5 is the day of the cryptographer, and the day of the diver, and the midwife
  • 7th - Radio Day
  • from May 8 to May 31 - 22 more holidays

But unfortunately they fall on weekdays or just weekends.

Holidays in May 2017: where to go

There are a lot of recreation options. It all depends on your desires and capabilities, both financial and family.

Trips to nature or to the country. There is a lot of work at the dacha now after winter. And of course, kebabs, because it’s so good and tasty. This option is the least expensive, combining both benefits and interest.

Use the services of travel agencies, which are now in every city, like mushrooms in a good forest. According to the advisor to Rostourism, holidays in warmer areas are now in demand.

Among them, the leading countries are Turkey, Greece, Jordan, Thailand and others. You can still buy air tickets here.

Sochi and Crimea deserve special attention. In the latter, according to the Minister of Tourism of Crimea, many new hotels and beaches have been commissioned this year. Charter flights are available.

With the help of these same travel agencies, you can carry out one to four daily interesting tours, both to your regions, for example along the Golden Ring, and to the regions of the Caucasus.

Of no less interest is visiting museums, cinemas, exhibitions, zoos (with children) in your cities.

A little history of the birth of these holidays

Today, not everyone knows that the May 1st holiday originated in America back in 1886, when Chicago workers, tired of the arbitrariness of their employers, went on demonstrations demanding the establishment of an 8-hour (instead of 15) working day.

The demonstrations were brutally dispersed by Chicago police using guns, and many demonstrators were killed. But the struggle continued, and in 1889, by its decision, the 2nd International at the Paris Congress officially approved the May Day holiday - the day of solidarity of workers and laborers of all countries.

The working people of Russia did not stand aside, and already in 1890 they began to fight for their rights. And only in 1917, after the October Revolution, May 1st became an official holiday, followed by demonstrations and a military parade.

In the USSR, these events even became “mandatory”, with government and party leaders in the stands, processions of citizens with slogans and banners, columns of representatives of enterprises and educational institutions.

These days, May Day military parades have been canceled, and demonstrations are being held, although they are not brought to the level of “ideological”, and not on such a scale as in Soviet times.

The first time the holiday May 9 became a non-working day was in 1945, when Stalin, after delivering the act of German surrender to Moscow, signed a corresponding decree. There was no limit to the people's jubilation; a 30-gun salute was fired.

Well, the parade itself took place on June 24 - time was needed for careful preparation. But in 1947, the day off was canceled - all efforts were devoted to restoring the consequences of the war. And in the year of celebrating the twentieth anniversary of the Great Victory in 1965, this day again became a non-working day.

Since the collapse of the USSR there has been no festive events, fireworks and military parades. This continued until 1995, when the tradition of holding military parades on Red Square was restored.

In all cities, solemn rallies began to be held at the Eternal Flame with tears, laying on Eternal Flame wreaths and flowers. The passage of the Immortal Regiment was a gratifying moment - a sign of deep respect for the millions who fell in this terrible war for the free life of future generations.

But for these 2 holidays, the Russian authorities, using a combination of working days and weekends, to the delight of citizens, significantly increased the duration of rest for the May holidays.

As a result, in May 2017 we will have a 3-day vacation for the Spring Festival, and as many as 4 for Victory Day.

To avoid mistakes when planning your vacation, check out the calendar of official holidays.

Good luck and good health to you.

Every year, Russians plan their holidays in May much in advance. Last month Spring brings joy with almost summer sun, fine warm days and wildly blooming nature. How pleasant it is to spend a day or two in the fresh air, in the company of good friends, inhaling the aromas of meat and fish cooking on the grill or in the kebab barbecue!

In order to properly prepare for spring holidays, you need to know the exact dates of the weekends that will bring us May holidays in 2017.

Why are we going on holiday in May?

As you know, in May there are two big ones awaiting us every year: May 1 and May 9. Usually the celebrations of these dates “merge” into one long May holiday, which allows Russians to plan a full-fledged mini-vacation.

May 1 is celebrated as Labor Day (other names: May Day, Spring Day, Labor Day, Spring and Labor Festival, and the most common name is International Workers' Day. This good holiday is celebrated by quite a few countries either on the first of May or on the first Monday of the last spring month .

May Day became a state holiday in the RSFSR in 1918 and sounded like International Day. Over time, the name of the holiday has changed several times:

  • in 1930 - the Holiday of International Solidarity of the Proletariat;
  • in 1943 - the Fighting Festival of the International Proletariat;
  • in 1946 - World Workers' Day;
  • in 1972 - International Workers' Day - May Day.

IN modern Russia May 1 is celebrated precisely as the Spring and Labor Festival. Of course, now the holiday has completely lost its original political character. Most Russians perceive May 1 as a day to once again take a break from work, and some take May Day seriously as the beginning of the gardening season.

Traditional May Day dates back to the times of the USSR, but the custom of gathering with family and friends on May 1-2 for a picnic with a trip to nature has survived to this day.

May 9 is a big holiday both for Russia and for the countries of the entire post-Soviet space, because this day represents Great Victory troops of the Red Army and ordinary Soviet people over Nazi Germany in the Great Patriotic War, which lasted four years (1941 - 1945).

The joyful holiday Victory Day was established by the Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on May 8, 1945, and on May 9 of each year it is widely celebrated by all segments of the population.

On Victory Day, various events are organized, for example, an organized procession and laying of flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, festive parades are held in hero cities, and in the evening volleys of fireworks and fireworks cut through the blue surface of the sky.

Nowadays, on Victory Day, military parades are held on Red Square with the participation of both military equipment and military aircraft.

Since 2012, the “Immortal Regiment” campaign has been held, the participants of which march in an organized column and carry portraits of parents, grandfathers and great-grandfathers who fought for the freedom of their country. Having started in Tomsk, since 2013 the “Immortal Regiment” campaign has spread throughout Russia and even beyond its borders.

Official days off for the May holidays in 2017

This year, the government of the Russian Federation decided, obviously, that it would stop pampering the Russians with long periods of time. The production calendar for the month of May developed in such a way that it was not possible to have a solid rest. We vacation in May on the following dates:

  • from April 29 to May 1 inclusive;
  • from May 7 to May 9 inclusive.

So, let's look at the weekend dates in more detail:

  • Since May 1 fell on a weekday (Monday) in 2017, we can assume that Russians will be able to rest for three whole days in a row: Saturday, April 29, Sunday, April 30, and Monday, May 1. This period of time should be enough to organize an excellent May Day with trips to the country, to nature, to the river or to the forest.
  • In 2017, the 72nd anniversary of the victory over the Nazi interventionists is coming. May 9 falls on a Tuesday this year, so you need to be prepared to move Monday, May 8 to one of the Saturdays. Most likely, you will need to work the pre-holiday day for May 8 on May 6, Saturday. But you shouldn’t be upset about the “missing” Saturday, because, according to labor legislation, the working day will be shortened.

It turns out that residents of the Russian Federation will be able to fully relax for three whole days: Sunday, May 7, Monday, May 8, and Tuesday, May 9. And, if you take into account the shortened Saturday, then the May holidays turn out to be quite good.
