It should be added that the same Peter issued the Charter, according to which “Navigators should not be allowed into taverns, for they, boorish spawn, do not hesitate to get drunk and cause brawls.” - “During a battle, navigators should not be allowed onto the upper deck, because with their vile appearance they upset the entire battle.” These are the articles in the charter of Peter the Great. But this is so, by the way, and not for the holiday.

Many famous naval commanders began their military service as a ship's navigator. Among them are the admirals who laid the foundation of the modern Russian fleet - S. Gorshkov, V. Mikhailin, A. Mikhailovsky, and many others. In the history of great geographical discoveries, the names of navigators are on a par with ship commanders and admirals. In the Primorsky Territory alone, the names of navigators of the Russian fleet are immortalized in the names of 64 capes, 12 islands, 3 peninsulas, 9 bays.

The profession of a ship and flagship navigator is considered particularly difficult and responsible, and also, as stated in the Rules for the Organization of Navigation Service on Navy Ships, “the work of a navigator on a voyage is of a creative nature.” Moreover, today we are talking about navigator service not only in the Navy, but also in the entire Russian fleet.

The Navy celebrated its professional holiday for the first time in its history on January 25, 1997, in accordance with the order of the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, and in 2001 the navigational service of the Russian fleet celebrated its 300th anniversary.

Currently, to improve the training of navigational services of formations, combat units on ships, work to prevent navigational accidents using modern methods and methods of navigation, drafts of new guidelines and methodological documents for navigational training in the Navy are being developed: guidelines for organizing navigational service, rules for navigational service for surface ships and submarines of the Navy. The new manual and rules formulate the concept of “navigator training” for the first time. It includes a comprehensive multi-level training system for both personnel of navigating combat units of ships, as well as flag navigators, ship watch officers, formation commanders, their deputies, and ship commanders.

The fleets continue to work to improve existing and search for new methods and techniques for solving navigation problems. The possibilities of determining the location of submarines without surfacing under the periscope are being explored. Methods for solving navigational problems of ship navigation when sailing under the ice of the Arctic have been introduced into navigation practice. The electronic information navigation system is being actively developed. The navigator service, as one of the main components of the entire Russian Navy, has a great history, and the current generation of navigator officers solves complex problems on the seas and oceans, continuing the best traditions of their predecessors.
